Discovered off the coast of Marsala, Sicily, in 1971 by a team led by Honor Frost, the Marsala Shipwreck offers a rare glimpse into ancient maritime trade and warfare. Dating back to the 3rd century BCE, this Punic ship likely belonged to the Carthaginian fleet during the First Punic War, a crucial conflict between Rome and Carthage.
The well-preserved vessel, along with its cargo and artifacts, provides valuable insights into ancient shipbuilding techniques, Carthaginian strategies, and Mediterranean trade networks. As one of the most significant nautical archaeological finds, the Marsala Shipwreck captivates historians, archaeologists, and enthusiasts, illuminating the complexities of ancient naval warfare and commerce.
To reconstruct the ship, we created models of the surviving timbers for investigation both independently and within their original context. By generating 3D models, we can recreate the site as it was during excavation and study elements such as makers’ marks.
